Your Marketability
- Reviewing your marketability should be a regular, ongoing activity. This will set you up for success when you are looking for a new job opportunity.
- Stay current on the skill set of the market – what is in demand, and whether the market in your area is getting hotter or cooler.
- Join professional organizations or online groups that will help you stay in touch with your colleagues and their experiences looking for work.
- Increase your skill set whenever possible. Read books, take courses, help out on projects that involve a subject you want to know more about.
- Check out the many free or low-cost tutorials made available on the Internet; search on “Subject name Tutorial” to see what you can find. This will add to your skill set while showing employers are you interested in continuing to learn.
- Do not be intimidated by job descriptions of “desired” skills; instead, be prepared to describe why you can still do the job well with your current skill set.
- Always learn as much as you can about subject areas and technologies that are used by the people who interact with you on the job. Cross training and understanding different aspects of the jobs is always good in situations where resources are scarce.
